Legal Gay Marriage in Ireland: A Time to Celebrate

This a great time for LGBT activism, as more and more people around the world show their support for the gay community and the rights of gay people everywhere. Last May 25, the historic referendum legalizing same-sex marriage has been put to vote at Dublin Castle, with over 62.1 percent voting in favor while 37.9 percent against. In over the two million people who voted, almost a million cast their vote in favor compared to the almost 700,000 people who voted no.

Supporters took their elation to Twitter following the historic vote, making the hashtag “We Made History” a trending topic. Before the vote, Taoiseach Enda Kenny had said that the vote results will “obliterate” prejudice to the LGBT community, saying that the outcome will “[disclose] who we are – a generous, compassionate, bold and joyful people.” Deputy Prime Minister Joan Burton, meanwhile, stated that the Irish people have “struck a massive blow against discrimination.”

On the other hand, the LGBT community from Northern Ireland is yet to experience the jubilation of finally legalizing same-sex marriage, which, according to Gavin Boyd of the Rainbow Project gay rights group, is “not a reality” until now. Northern Ireland remains the only region in Western Europe not legalizing same-sex marriage.

To show support for the people in Northern Ireland, you can wear a striking gay pride t-shirt in time for the Gay Pride Month.
