Gay
pride parades are an integral part of gay culture. Ever since the Stonewall
riots in the late 60s, these parades have been a way to show the world that
gays aren’t ashamed of who and what they are. Now that you’ve decided to step
out of the closet, attending one can be a good way for you to connect with the
community. It’s not as easy as getting the t-shirt and showing up, however.
Here are a few tips.
- Ignore the Haters. Pride parades are public events and that can be problematic. Some haters will be showing up with placards and discouraging messages. If you do see them, just ignore them. It’s a free country so they can believe what they believe, just the same as you can. Don’t engage with them or talk with them. Most importantly, don’t let them bring you down.
- Be a Friend. Gay pride is about being a community. This means giving a helping hand and looking out for others. If someone needs some assistance, offer your services. Who knows, you might meet a new friend.
Finally, just enjoy. Gay pride parades
are about celebrating who you are with people who are just like you. Have a
great time getting to know others in your community and knowing that you are
not alone.
